MSNBC: American Cardinal Robert F. Prevost Announced as New Pope
EXCERPT:
JANSING: "The announcement has been made, and it is an astonishing selection. An American, the first American cardinal, Robert Francis Prevost, 69 years old, born in Chicago, Illinois, created a cardinal just two years ago by Pope Francis, is the new pope. Robert Francis Prevost. And you see members of the college coming out. This was not high on anyone’s list. He was mentioned if there was to be an American and then dismissed because he was an American. He is reportedly very close to Pope Francis’s vision on the environment, his outreach to the poor and migrants, meeting people where they are. Just last year, he said something that sounds an awful lot like something Pope Francis would have said. He said, 'The Bishop is not supposed to be a little prince sitting in his kingdom.' Importantly, he spoke supportively of Pope Francis’ change in pastoral practice to allow divorced and civilly remarried Catholics to receive holy communion."
