Rob Smith Reaches out to Young Black Conservatives with Non-Profit ‘The Douglass Society’
EXCERPT:
SMITH: "What we want to do with The Douglas Society is threefold. We want to reach out to young, disaffected African-American Democrats, independents and conservatives where they are. Now, this generally tends to be more on social media and the Internet because they're not generally going to mainstream media outlets, so I decided to build this website and this page, and specifically on Instagram @DouglassSociety to highlight the amazing black conservatives that are doing things out there in the media, people from Sen. Tim Scott to our great congressman Byron Donalds, to our other congressman Burgess Owens, to the myriad of black conservative thought leaders that are out there, and there is no place online where you can find all of this stuff until now. Second of all, I want to highlight the things that these people are doing and eventually, once we build up this platform, we want to get out into the communities and partner with organizations that are already showing up for African Americans. Because I've got to tell you, Steve, and I say this as a proud Republican, somebody that is a registered Republican, we just don’t do enough as a party to reach out to African Americans and show up where they are when it's not six weeks before an election. So the work that needs to be done in order to engage these young black millennials that are independent, conservative-leaning leaning and even disaffected Democrats needs to start now. So that is what we plan to do with The Douglass Society. We have had a great launch, there’s a lot of interest, there's a lot of people donating, there's a lot of people following us on social media. So it's very exciting to launch this and be a part of this, Steve."
