ZELIZER: "Like so many of his jokes, they have an itch. I think the joke has an edge, obviously, if you’re in China, if you would hear this joke, you wouldn’t find it funny. It lends support to a regime which is doing the wrong thing and here in the United States, it has an edge because it’s part of an ongoing story, ongoing series of messages we have heard throughout his administration about authoritarianism and his distain in some ways for free institution. So a joke like that, when it comes from President Trump, is loaded and it comes in the context of all these other remarks we have heard from him."
